ARTIST’S PROFILE
Marguerite Broten, Canadian potter and Oakville
resident is a Saskatchewan native. She first developed her love of
clay in Alberta and for more than 25 years she has continuously
strived to increase her knowledge and improve her skills. Her work
reflects the functional heritage of pottery and her design
techniques are used to create unique pieces of art as well as
pottery which can be enjoyed and used daily.
Marguerite is mindful that the discovery of
pottery was a major step in the progress of humankind. Pottery
vessels provided a way to store water and to keep grains and other
foods dry. This power over clay became an integral part of the
ability to manage our food supply and ended the need for a migrant
way of life. Marguerite never ceases to be fascinated by the
history, style, and design of pottery.
A STUDENT OF POTTERY TECHNOLOGY
AND DESIGN
She has studied with outstanding Canadian potters
such as Robin Hopper, Les Manning, Don Wells, John Chalke, Ron Roy,
Bruce Cochrane, and others. She has visited the studios of major
potters in Canada and the United States.
She has learned a diversity of methods through her
association with the potters’ communities in Alberta, Quebec, and
Ontario.
Her firing skills include oxidation-reduction,
oxidation, raku, and primitive firings.
Marguerite continues to experiment and search for
glazes that will compliment her clays, her hands, and her kilns –
the elements of her art.
A TEACHER OF POTTERY
She is eager to spread her enthusiasm for clay,
and to share her knowledge and skills with others.
In St. Albert, Alberta, children’s pottery classes
provided the initial experience of seeing others benefit from her
knowledge.
At Stewart Hall in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, adult
education and recreation classes became the focus of her teaching
efforts.
At the Oakville Art Society, Marguerite offers
children’s workshops and adult classes that include handbuilding,
wheel throwing, and sculpting methods. She also offers pottery
classes in Oakville schools and has organized workshops for
secondary school art departments.
